HISTORY

A Journey Through Time

Starting in Alimos, a seaside neighborhood of the Athens Riviera, we will journey along ancient Greek ports and cities. We will visit temples, museums, and we will walk the paths that were walked millennia ago. Local guides will give us valuable information about the history and the myths of these sacred places.

The Temple of Aphaea

Aphaea, Aegina

In Aegina, our first destination and in the heart of the Saronic Gulf, lies the temple of Aphaea in the Aphaea Sanctuary. Named after the goddess it is dedicated to, it is not surprising that this pine-covered hill top was a site for worship since the Mycenaean period. This temple along with the temple of Poseidon in Sounion and the temple of Hephaestus in Thission, Athens, form a perfect isosceles triangle. Such cases of triangulation of Greek temples proves that the Greeks surely knew where to build them based on ‘sacred geography’ and specific astronomical orientation.

The Acropolis of Carthaea

Carthaea, Kea

Our next destination is Kea, a Cycladic island of rugged natural beauty. On a secluded bay on the southeastern side, reachable only by sea or on foot, lies the Acropolis of Carthaea, one of Kea’s four ancient city-states and a significant harbor of the Cyclades in ancient times. If conditions allow for anchoring and disembarking, the whole complex is free to visit. Due to its remote location, away from the hordes of tourists, the area gives the visitor a feeling of serenity and peace, wrapped in ancient mystery at an imposing location.

The Acient Theatre of Carthaea

Carthaea, Kea

Situated on a natural slope, around 80 meters away from the beach, and despite it’s small size, this ancient theatre can host up to 2000 people. To this day, events are still held occasionally on this southwest-facing theatre. It consists of three distinguished structural parts: the audience seating area, the orchestra, and the stage building. These are typical characteristics of theatres of the Hellenistic period and nearby findings have confirmed that. Built entirely by stone, this small theatre will undoubtedly steal your heart once you stand in front of it!

The Stone Lion of Kea

Ioulis, Kea

Next we’ll move toward the heart of Kea. From the main town of Ioulis (or ‘Ioulida’), the famous Lion of Kea can be easily reached after a pleasant stroll along a stone road. Carved from a natural stone slab around 600 BC, the lion serves as the town’s guardian against the Nymphs, according to one of the many myths that surround this… rather peculiar-looking sculpture.

The Temple of Poseidon

Sounion, Attica

This will be our last stop. If conditions allow, we will drop our anchor right below the temple. The entrance to the archaeological site is only a short hike up the hill where the magnificent temple lies 73 mt. above the sea level. The views from the top are stunning, especially as the sun sets! According to the myth, it was here that Aegeus, the father of Theseus, ended his life by jumping off the cliff, giving in such a tragic way his name to the Aegean Sea.

GASTRONOMY

The Greek Cuisine

If you love food, then this trip is for you! Get ready to taste Greek traditional dishes and local delicacies. And why not try out making some Greek food yourself! With cooking lessons by two professional chefs, you will learn from the best. Our gastronomical trip wouldn’t be complete without drink tasting, and a visit to a pistachio farm in Aegina!

Meet Chef Rania

For Rania, cooking is an art form. Her gastronomical path as a chef has been extremely successful. Not in the realm of TV celebrity chefs, but as a humble cook who has offered a lot in the gastronomy not only of Aegina but outside of the island as well. That’s because of her endless passion, talent, and constant search for new exciting flavors, something that requires instinct which she has!

She is a member of the gastronomical team of the ‘Aegina Fistiki Fest’, a three-day event held every September in Aegina and when she is not hosting cooking lessons, you will find her cooking in the family-owned restaurant Petrá (Πετρά), a must-stop in the main town of Aegina.

Meet Chef Dora

Dora runs the Odyssey bistro in Poros which her parents started in 1995. She has been an active member of Odyssey since she was 4, sitting on the countertop and holding the hand mixer so that Katerina, her mother and chef, could make homemade cakes. Polite and warm, friendly and passionate, creative and organized, she is what makes Odyssey so special.

Her enthusiasm in combination with her bubbly personality and the way she explains everything makes her cooking classes a memorable experience. Plus, you will learn to make delicious Greek recipes!

The 'Fystikato' Pistachio Farm

The ‘Fystikato’ pistachio farm is only a short drive from the main town of Aegina. It belongs to one of the oldest pistachio farmers in Aegina with more than 40 years of experience cultivating over 5000 trees. At the farm, we’ll be greeted by the owner’s son-in-law, Haris, who will give us a 1-hour tour around the farm. It’s these two men who came up with the Fystikato business idea.

During the tour, you will to learn about the history and arrival of the pistachio nut in Aegina, details about its cultivation, collection, and processing that it undergoes before you’ll be able to taste all the delicious products.

Purchases of products are possible at the farm but with cash only. If you need to use a credit card, you’ll need to visit the Fystikato shop in the town of Aegina right in front of the sea close to the ferry terminal.

The 'Fystikato' Shop

The ‘Fystikato’ shop was born in 2014 in Aegina as an attempt to make pistachio of excellent quality available to the public. Later on, more pistachio-based products were added, also in cooperation with other local producers. Currently, the Fystikato products are distributed only to carefully-selected delicatessen shops around Greece and are exported to other countries in Europe in very small numbers as the production in Aegina is limited. The lovely Christina will be glad to assist you select products to enjoy during the trip or to take back home!

'Aristaios' Shop

Hidden about 2,2 km from the port of Kea on the quiet uphill road to Ioulis, ‘Aristaios’ is the place where you’ll find high quality local products. Delicious smoked sausages, mouth-watering cured meats, cheeses, rustic bread, the best honey and rice pudding around (we personally guarantee that!), many types of fruit liqueurs and almond sweets, ice creams with interesting flavors (like the very aromatic rose geranium flavor), fruit preserves, wines, balsamic vinegars, pastas, chutneys, dried herbs, and a huge variety of all sorts of sweets. Here you will find many specialties such as the acorn cookies, as well as other acorn and carob-based delicacies. Except for food, there are also handmade soaps, ceramic and enamel pottery products, and books.

The people of Aristaios, cultivate and produce these food treasures from generation to generation using traditional recipes with care and creativity that hide the secrets of an authentic, rural Kea. From the orchards of their grandfather Apostolis, a farmer and “xotáris” of Mylopotamos, to your table, trust us when we say you’ll want to come back for more!
